The University Grants Commission (UGC) has requested all colleges and universities to organize various events and activities on the occasion of Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan’s birthday. Celebrated nationwide as Teachers’ Day on September 5, after the imposition of the National Education Policy (NEP) in 2020, the Indian government observes the day as Shikshak Parv.
For Shikshak Parv 2022, the UGC issued a notification ordering all higher education institutions to observe the events between September 5 and September 9. “The idea behind the celebration of Shikshak Parv is to recognize the dignity of the teaching profession and the contribution of teachers. to nurture young minds and nation building,” the commission wrote in the notification.

Suggesting the events, UGC mentioned the congratulation of faculty members, workshops, webinars, reading of books and lectures by eminent scholars, screening of educational films and an exhibition on the contribution of teachers to the Indian knowledge system, among others. The UGC mentioned that the activities listed are indicative and that the institutions are authorized to organize similar activities, if not the ones they have listed.
The UGC has asked higher education institutions to “ensure maximum student participation” in the various events and activities they organize. Institutions are required to record events and share them on various social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram. The UGC also asked institutions to update the monitoring portal set up by the statutory body.
The notification further stated: “Details of the organizations of the above events and attendance may be shared on the UGC University Activities Monitoring Portal https://uamp.ugc.ac.in/ at the latest September 12, 2022.”
The UGC in July this year announced that the government would award some of the “best teachers” with an honorary award to celebrate their “unique contribution” to improving the quality of school education. The National Awards to Teachers (NAT) awards will be presented on September 5.
