Tri-state schools increase police presence after nationwide TikTok threats

HOBOKEN, N.J. (WABC) — School officials and police departments across the country are trying to reassure students and parents after disrupting social media posts calling for possible threats against the school on Friday.

The origin of the messages is still under investigation, but many districts are now taking precautions, especially in the wake of the deadly Michigan school shooting.

It’s a horrific situation for children in which history keeps repeating itself, and on Thursday, local police in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, as well as Homeland Security and other law enforcement officials school described the latest threat of school violence on TikTok.

The chatter surrounds December 17, which is called “Shoot Up Your School Day.”

Nassau County Police Commission Patrick Ryder said the threat was not credible, but it drained their resources.

“”All schools in the United States will be targeted on December 17. Stay safe. Stay home. “It went viral,” he said. “We are going to be there tomorrow to visit each of our schools.”

In Nassau County, that includes 450 buildings — with fewer cops able to investigate crimes.
Additionally, another trend emerging is the posting and posting of stock photos of guns accompanied by false threats.

Nassau police said they are facing a significant increase in threats at school this year, up 148% from last year and 25% from 2019.

“It’s a very difficult time, I can’t wait for this to end,” said Nassau Schools Safety Commissioner Dr. Joseph Famularo. “We just continue to work with our staff, to work as a team and it really is a team effort.”

Hoboken Police will also be present at area schools, as well as others in New York City.

A bulletin distributed to NYPD public and private sector partners said:

“The NYPD is aware of social media posts circulating on TikTok regarding a potential school shooting on Friday, December 17. At this time, (NYPD) would like our public and private sector security personnel to know that there There is no credible information to suggest this threat is specific to any New York City school. We are working closely with our federal and state partners to ensure the communication of any relevant information. As a precaution, the NYPD has deployed additional resources around city schools.
