Mohammed Choudhury named superintendent of New Maryland State Schools – CBS Baltimore

ANNAPOLIS (WJZ) — Maryland has appointed a new public school superintendent, Mohammed Choudhury.

Choudhury is currently Associate Superintendent and Director of Strategy, Talent and Innovation at the San Antonio Independent School District. He previously served in Dallas and Los Angeles Public Schools.

The state school board officially voted to offer Choudhury the job Thursday afternoon. He accepted and will begin his term on July 1.

“For years, Maryland’s public schools have been a model for other states, and there is an incredibly strong foundation to build on to ensure that every student in Maryland has the opportunity to build a bright future. But being one of the best states for education doesn’t mean there aren’t gaps in the system, and it certainly doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement” , said Choudhury.

He will serve the remaining three years of Dr. Karen Salmon’s term. She is retiring on June 30.

On his LinkedIn profile, Choudhury said, “I began my career in education as a middle school ESL and social studies teacher in the Pico-Union neighborhood of central Los Angeles. I have a master’s degree in urban education from the teacher education program at the University of California, Los Angeles. »

“At the start, one of my concerns was that a three-year term would be an obstacle to finding the best candidates. It was not,” State School Board Chairman Clarence Crawford said.

Crawford said the committee interviewed 11 nominees virtually before identifying four “outstanding” finalists for in-person interviews.

“So many of your references have described you as ‘visionary,’ ‘innovative,’ ‘transformational,’ ‘committed to equity,’ a ‘rising star,’ that you’re ready for this,” said Rose Li, member of the board of directors, in Choudhury. .

“When we set out to find Maryland’s next superintendent, our goal was to identify and hire the most qualified candidate to build the future of education for all children in Maryland.
