Connecticut State Colleges and Universities End Mask Mandate

CONNECTICUT, USA — After two years of mandatory masks, students will now be able to smell the spring air mask for free.

To date, masking is optional at all 17 CSCU schools. They are also ending other COVID-19 protocols that were implemented two years ago, one being weekly COVID-19 testing and contact tracing testing.

Rapid tests will still be available for people they believe may have come into contact with the virus. If a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19, universities ask them to report online.

Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) is one of the schools where the mask mandate is being lifted and some students say it will be nice to return to some normality.

“It’s time to take a break, it’s nice to talk without a mask,” said CCSU senior Eric Brosnan, it’s easy to breathe and some kids will probably enjoy coming to class a little more without having to wear a mask. .

The CCSU president said cases are extremely low and it’s time to give people the option to wear a mask. With the guidelines relaxed, the university still wants to be prepared in the event of a new outbreak.

“We have seen a significant downward trend,” said CCSU President Zulma Toro. “We have things in place in case there is an increase in cases, but I think with new guidance from the CDC and the state, it was a good time for us to change course.”

Starting this summer, COVID-19 vaccines will no longer be mandatory for staff and students. With in-person classes and events for the summer semester.

The positivity rate in Connecticut fell from 3.68% to 3.35%. For now, students and staff at CCSU and other colleges and universities can enjoy a return to normalcy and seeing some faces again.
