Acting Premier Steven Miles announces air conditioning in all Queensland state schools

The Queensland Government has announced that all public schools in Queensland are now fully air-conditioned.

Acting Premier Steven Miles and Education Minister Grace Grace visited Wavell State High School to announce that the state government’s promise to provide air conditioning to all public schools had been delivered ahead of schedule .

“We promised the people of Queensland that we would air-condition every classroom, library and staff room in every public school in Queensland and that’s exactly what we’ve done,” Mr Miles said.

“Around 10,000 places in 649 public schools in Queensland have been cooled thanks to our $477 million investment in the Cooler Cleaner Schools scheme.”

Mr Miles said the installations were completed just in time for the start of the second quarter.

“Due to completion in June 2022, all facilities have been completed more than two months ahead of schedule to ensure students and staff can enjoy air-conditioned spaces from the start of Term 2,” it said. he declares.

“We know that students learn better when they are in cooler and more comfortable learning environments.

“I know there will be happy teachers, parents, students and staff across Queensland today.”

Education Minister Grace Grace said the Cooler Cleaner Schools scheme has provided air conditioning to more than 300 schools in Brisbane alone.

“The Palaszczuk government has worked to ensure that our students and staff now enjoy the benefits of air conditioning in approximately 10,000 school spaces,” she said.

“This includes 323 schools in the greater Brisbane area alone, with a total investment of approximately $129 million covering over 5,660 spaces in the area which are now fitted with air conditioning.

Ms Grace said adding new air conditioners and ventilation units could help minimize the spread of Covid in classrooms.

“Ventilation of learning spaces can be provided naturally, by opening windows and doors when conditions permit, or mechanically through ventilation and air conditioning systems that bring in fresh air from outside” , she said.

The Cooler Cleaner Schools program is thought to have provided around 1,000 jobs with another 4,100 to come in the 2021-22 financial year.
