Since the fall of 2005, the Reed Secular Alliance has collected secular, progressive, and educational materials to give to prisoners, mental institutions, and others in need. The Freethought Books Project has collected roughly 2300 materials, the majority of which have been donated to prisoners and charitable organizations across America. For our efforts, we were awarded the 2006 Secular Student Alliance’s Best Service Project Award.

Letter from a Prisoner to the Freethought Books Project
The above is but a sample of the gratitute that the RSA receives from prisoners on a weekly basis. Nearly all of those to whom we’ve donated have volunteered that they share these works with friends, and that the titles make great conversation-starters. Our goal in all these efforts is not to make people into “devout atheists”, but is to enrich the diversity of opinions available to those in need.

Secular Student Alliance Best Award
2006 Secular Student Alliance Best Service Award
For the RSA’s efforts, the club received the 2006 Secular Student Alliance Best Service Project Award. The prize consisted of the above plaque and $100. The money was promptly donated to the cause; as a result of that award, the Reed Secular Alliance bought several freethought and science books at a Reed College used book sale.
