The Reed Secular Alliance is pleased to announce that President Leslie Zukor will be attending a Humanistic Jewish Passover Seder on Saturday, April 11th, 2009. The event, which is sponsored by Kol Shalom, Humanist Jewish Congregation of Portland, will draw secular Jews from all over the Portland metropolitan area.
Leslie, who was born into a Reform Jewish family, is excited to go to the event. “I am anxious to see how the Passover Seder will reconcile Judaism with secularism,” Zukor says. ” she explained. “I have always enjoyed Jewish culture. It’s just that I have identified with non-theistic beliefs.”
Humanistic Judaism takes a human-centered approach to solving problems, without resorting to the supernatural. Since most of its members are non-theists, Kol Shalom’s mission is to allow freethinking Jews to identify with their culture, heritage, and traditions. In short, one can be Jewish without belief in God.
