Fred Phelps’s infamous Westboro Baptist Church will be in Portland on Monday. What is the extremist “Baptist” Church protesting? The answer is that they are picketing Portland State University’s Queer Resource Center, and more specifically, gender neutral bathrooms. “Gender neutral bathrooms”, according to PSU Atheists and Agnostics founder, Jason Baidenmann, aren’t the co-ed bathrooms that are present in many dorms at Reed. In such places, a man and a woman could be taking a shower in adjacent stalls. Rather, “[Gender-neutral bathrooms] are just single person bathrooms, which can be used by either sex”. One wonders why such an innocent concept is so opposed by the WBC.
The Reed Secular Alliance will be protesting adjacent to the Portland State University campus on Monday morning. The Portland State University Queer Resource Center’s protest will be located at 12th and Market, one block down from 13th and Market, where the Westboro Baptist Church will be protesting. “I am really excited to be protesting the Westboro Baptist Church,” club President, Leslie Zukor explained. “I have read about their insanity for a while now, and now it’s time to counter their hate with some reason and common sense”.
